16 European Cities and What Solo Travelers Should Know

16 European Cities and What Solo Travelers Should Know

Post created October 29, 2026

Traveling alone can be one of the better ways to explore Europe. You get to set your own schedule, spend as much time as you want at a particular attraction, and change plans without having to negotiate with anyone else. Of course, being the only person responsible for your itinerary also means paying a little more attention to your surroundings.

That doesn’t mean Europe’s major cities are inherently dangerous for solo travelers. Most attract visitors throughout the year, and plenty of people explore them independently without trouble. Still, knowing about common scams, transportation options, local crime concerns, and official travel advisories can make a trip considerably easier.

Here are 16 European cities and some practical things to consider before visiting on your own. This isn’t a ranking of dangerous destinations, and the risks vary considerably from one location to another. In fact, one city on this list carries a serious government travel warning, while others simply call for the same precautions you’d take in any busy tourist destination.

Manchester, United Kingdom

Manchester has plenty to offer visitors traveling independently, from its music venues and football culture to museums, restaurants, and historic neighborhoods. The city is also well connected by trains, buses, and the Metrolink tram system, making it relatively easy to explore without renting a car. The nearby Salford Quays waterfront, pictured here, is another popular destination. As with most large cities, the main considerations for solo visitors involve keeping track of belongings in crowded places and making sensible transportation arrangements, particularly after a late night out.

Manchester (continued)

Manchester’s nightlife districts can get busy, especially on weekends and around major sporting events. If you’re heading out alone, make sure you know how you’ll get back to your accommodation before the evening gets underway. Use licensed taxis or established ride-booking services rather than accepting rides from strangers. The original article raised concerns about potholes and road maintenance, but those issues don’t establish whether a city is safe for solo tourists. For visitors, understanding the local transportation network and choosing well-reviewed accommodation are more useful considerations.

Malmö, Sweden

Located in southern Sweden, Malmö is connected to Copenhagen by the Öresund Bridge, making it an accessible stop for travelers exploring both countries. Its historic center, waterfront neighborhoods, restaurants, and public spaces give visitors plenty to see without requiring a complicated itinerary. Malmö has also experienced problems involving organized criminal networks, including shootings and explosions. Those incidents deserve attention, but they don’t mean that every neighborhood is unsafe or that visitors should avoid the city entirely. For solo travelers, it’s worth understanding local conditions rather than relying on a general crime ranking.

Malmö (continued)

The British government’s travel guidance acknowledges gang-related violence in Malmö, Stockholm, and Gothenburg, while also warning visitors about pickpocketing in major Swedish cities. That makes ordinary precautions a reasonable starting point: keep valuables secure, avoid becoming distracted in busy public areas, and check local information before exploring unfamiliar neighborhoods late at night. Travelers can also use Malmö’s buses and trains to move between attractions rather than walking unfamiliar routes after dark. The U.S. State Department currently advises increased caution in Sweden because of terrorism concerns, a countrywide advisory rather than a specific warning against Malmö.

Athens, Greece

Athens offers solo travelers a considerable amount of history in a relatively concentrated area. The Acropolis, ancient Agora, and surrounding neighborhoods attract visitors from around the world, while the city’s metro system makes it possible to reach many attractions without a car. Greece is classified by the U.S. State Department as a Level 1 destination, meaning travelers should exercise normal precautions. That’s an important distinction from the original article’s suggestion that Athens is broadly unsafe. Like other major tourist destinations, however, Athens does have some common problems visitors should be aware of.

Athens (continued)

Pickpocketing is one of the more common concerns in central Athens, particularly on crowded metro trains and around major attractions. Keep wallets and phones somewhere secure rather than in an easily accessible pocket. If you need a taxi, use an established booking service or a licensed vehicle, and confirm the fare arrangements. Demonstrations occasionally affect central Athens and can disrupt transportation, so checking local news before heading out is worthwhile. Otherwise, the same basic precautions you’d use in another busy European capital are generally appropriate.

Paris, France

Louvre Museum, Paris

Paris is one of Europe’s most visited cities, and solo travelers have no shortage of places to explore. Museums, historic neighborhoods, parks, restaurants, and public transportation make it possible to build an itinerary around almost any interest. The main practical concern for many visitors is petty theft, particularly in crowded tourist areas and on public transportation. Pickpockets frequently target distracted travelers near major attractions, train stations, and busy shopping streets. That doesn’t make Paris a destination to avoid, but it does mean your phone, wallet, and passport deserve a little extra attention.

Paris (continued)

The U.S. State Department advises increased caution in France because of terrorism and unrest. Demonstrations and transportation strikes can occur in Paris, sometimes affecting metro services or access to particular neighborhoods. For independent travelers, that makes flexibility useful. Keep an alternative route to your accommodation available and monitor local transportation updates during your visit. It’s also worth purchasing transit tickets through official machines or services rather than accepting unsolicited assistance from strangers. Paris remains a major international destination, but a little preparation can help prevent an otherwise enjoyable visit from becoming unnecessarily complicated.

Grenoble, France

Grenoble sits near the French Alps and serves as a center for education, scientific research, and outdoor recreation. Its historic streets, museums, and mountain views make it an appealing stop for travelers interested in something beyond France’s larger tourist destinations. The city has faced concerns about drug-related crime and violence, but the available evidence doesn’t justify labeling the entire destination unsafe for solo visitors. As elsewhere, local conditions can vary considerably between neighborhoods. Choosing accommodation with convenient transportation connections and researching the areas you plan to visit can make exploring Grenoble more straightforward.

Grenoble (continued)

Grenoble has a tram and bus network that helps visitors move around the metropolitan area. If you’re heading into the surrounding mountains, however, transportation and weather become additional considerations. Check trail conditions before hiking, carry appropriate supplies, and tell someone where you’re going if you plan to explore on your own. Back in the city, use normal precautions around transportation hubs and nightlife areas, particularly late at night. The original article relied on a crowdsourced crime-perception score, but that figure isn’t a reliable basis for determining whether an individual visitor will be safe.

Minsk, Belarus

Minsk stands apart from the other destinations on this list for an important reason. The U.S. Department of State currently classifies Belarus as Level 4, Do Not Travel, and explicitly advises American citizens against visiting for any reason. The concern isn’t simply ordinary street crime. Belarus has a record of arbitrary detention, restrictions on civil liberties, and serious political tensions connected to Russia’s war against Ukraine. American travelers could face difficulties obtaining consular assistance if detained or caught in an emergency. Unlike routine precautions in other European cities, this is a serious government warning against travel.

Minsk (continued)

The United States suspended operations at its embassy in Minsk in February 2022, severely limiting its ability to assist Americans in Belarus. Authorities may inspect electronic devices, restrict movement, and detain people over activities or communications considered politically sensitive. Transportation options and border crossings can also change unexpectedly. The British government likewise advises against all travel to Belarus. For Americans considering a solo trip, the appropriate recommendation is to postpone visiting rather than assume that ordinary precautions will adequately address these risks. Travelers should review the latest official advisory before making any plans involving Belarus.

Nice, France

Nice is one of the better-known destinations along the French Riviera, offering beaches, museums, restaurants, and a historic old town that’s enjoyable to explore on foot. For solo visitors, the main considerations are similar to those in other popular coastal cities. Busy beaches and crowded tourist areas can attract opportunistic thieves, so don’t leave phones, bags, or other valuables unattended while swimming. The Promenade des Anglais and surrounding streets are popular with visitors, but it’s still sensible to know your route back to your accommodation after dark. France’s national travel advisory also applies here, including guidance concerning demonstrations and terrorism risks.

Liège, Belgium

Liège is a historic city in Belgium’s French-speaking Wallonia region, with museums, churches, riverside views, and a busy central district. It also has rail connections to other Belgian cities, making it a reasonable stop for travelers exploring the country independently. The U.S. State Department advises increased caution in Belgium because of crime, terrorism, and unrest, although this is a nationwide advisory rather than a warning specifically targeting Liège. Petty theft can occur around busy transportation hubs, and travelers arriving late should have a clear route to their accommodation. There’s no reliable basis for declaring the city unsafe simply because some survey respondents feel less comfortable walking alone at night.

Montpellier, France

Montpellier is a university city in southern France with medieval streets, lively public squares, and easy access to the Mediterranean coast. Its historic center provides plenty for visitors to explore, particularly around the Place de la Comédie and surrounding pedestrian areas. Like many university cities, Montpellier has an active nightlife scene, along with the usual considerations that come with crowded bars and late-night transportation. The original article described Montpellier as one of Europe’s most dangerous cities based on a crime-perception index. That conclusion isn’t supported by reliable comparative crime data and shouldn’t discourage travelers from considering the destination.

Montpellier (continued)

Montpellier’s tram system makes it possible to reach many parts of the city without renting a car. For solo travelers, staying near reliable transportation and familiarizing yourself with the last departures can help avoid an unexpectedly long walk back to your hotel. Keep personal belongings secure in crowded areas, particularly around transportation stops and nightlife districts. If you’re heading to the coast, research the return journey rather than assuming public transportation will operate late into the evening. Those are practical planning considerations, not evidence that Montpellier is an unusually dangerous destination.

Naples, Italy

Naples is known for its historic center, archaeological sites, busy street life, and a food culture that helped make Neapolitan pizza famous around the world. It’s also a convenient starting point for visiting Pompeii and other attractions around the Bay of Naples. The city has a long history involving organized crime, particularly the Camorra, but that shouldn’t be confused with the risks most tourists are likely to encounter. For visitors, crowded transportation hubs, opportunistic theft, and unfamiliar traffic patterns are generally more relevant day-to-day concerns than an encounter with organized criminals.

Naples (continued)

Italy’s official travel guidance highlights pickpocketing, bag theft, and theft from parked vehicles as common visitor concerns, particularly in busy urban areas. In Naples, keeping valuables secure and paying attention at train and metro stations are worthwhile precautions. Driving can also be challenging for visitors unfamiliar with the city’s dense traffic and narrow streets, so public transportation may be the easier option for many trips. If you’re arriving late, arrange a reliable transfer or choose accommodation with a straightforward route from the station. None of that means Naples should automatically be crossed off a solo travel itinerary.

Birmingham, United Kingdom

Birmingham is a major English city with museums, shopping districts, a well-known food scene, and historic canals. Visitors traveling alone can explore its central attractions using public transportation, including trains, buses, and the West Midlands Metro. Like other large urban centers, Birmingham experiences problems involving theft, robbery, and other crime, but the original article’s statistics were misleading. In particular, its claim about tens of thousands of sexual offenses occurring within the city during a single year wasn’t supported by the cited information. A more useful approach is to consider the locations you’re visiting and the precautions appropriate for each one.

Birmingham (continued)

For solo visitors, Birmingham’s central transportation connections are useful, especially when traveling between attractions or arriving from another part of the United Kingdom. Keep bags and phones secure around crowded stations, shopping areas, and nightlife districts. If you’re staying out late, check public transportation schedules or arrange a licensed taxi instead of relying on an unfamiliar walking route. The U.S. State Department advises increased caution throughout the United Kingdom because of terrorism concerns and also notes the possibility of opportunistic theft. Those are countrywide considerations, not evidence that Birmingham is among Europe’s most dangerous cities.

Nantes, France

Nantes sits along the Loire River in western France and offers an interesting combination of history, art, and modern city life. Its attractions include the Château des Ducs de Bretagne and the imaginative mechanical creations associated with Les Machines de l’Île. The city’s public transportation network also makes it relatively straightforward to explore without a car. Nantes has experienced concerns about crime in some areas, but the original slideshow relied heavily on subjective safety ratings to characterize the entire city as dangerous. Those ratings don’t establish the risks that an individual traveler will face during a visit.

Nantes (continued)

Solo travelers visiting Nantes can take advantage of its tram and bus services to reach attractions around the city. As with other French destinations, the usual advice about protecting valuables in crowded places applies, along with staying informed about demonstrations or transportation strikes that could disrupt plans. If you’re exploring nightlife areas, familiarize yourself with the route back to your accommodation and avoid accepting transportation from unlicensed drivers. The city’s historical attractions and cultural venues remain legitimate reasons to visit, and any decision about personal safety should be based on current conditions rather than an outdated numerical ranking.

Coventry, United Kingdom

Coventry is a city in England’s West Midlands with a history stretching back centuries. Its best-known landmarks include the remains of the medieval cathedral, destroyed during World War II, and the modern cathedral constructed alongside it. The city also has museums, shopping districts, and transportation connections to Birmingham and London. While Coventry experiences crime like other urban areas, the original article’s claim that its crime rate was approximately 40 times the national average was incorrect. That sort of exaggerated statistic makes the destination sound far more threatening than the evidence supports.

Coventry (continued)

For independent travelers, Coventry’s railway station and central bus connections make it possible to explore the area without renting a vehicle. Ordinary precautions are still worthwhile, including keeping personal belongings secure around busy public areas and planning transportation after dark. Travelers should also distinguish between reported crime statistics and the likelihood of experiencing a particular incident while visiting. Recorded offenses include many different types of crime and don’t necessarily reflect the risks faced by tourists. Checking current local information and choosing well-reviewed accommodation provides a more practical starting point than labeling an entire city unsafe.

Catania, Italy

Catania sits on Sicily’s eastern coast near Mount Etna, offering historic architecture, markets, museums, and access to one of Europe’s most active volcanoes. It’s a popular starting point for exploring eastern Sicily, and many of its central attractions can be reached on foot. Organized crime has been a longstanding problem in parts of Sicily, but that doesn’t mean visitors should expect to encounter Mafia activity while sightseeing. The more immediate considerations for most solo travelers include protecting valuables in busy markets and transportation areas, understanding local transit options, and planning excursions outside the city carefully.

Catania (continued)

Visitors planning a trip from Catania to Mount Etna should pay attention to weather, volcanic activity, and access restrictions, which may change with local conditions. Exploring unfamiliar volcanic terrain alone isn’t advisable without suitable preparation or local expertise. Within the city, watch for pickpockets in crowded areas and use reputable transportation services, particularly when arriving late or carrying luggage. The original article suggested avoiding the outskirts of town altogether, but that’s too broad to be useful. Researching specific destinations and routes is a better approach than assuming every area outside the historic center presents the same risks.

Marseille, France

Marseille is a major Mediterranean port city known for its waterfront, seafood, historic neighborhoods, and access to the Calanques. It has also experienced serious problems involving organized drug trafficking and gang-related violence. Those issues shouldn’t be dismissed, but they need to be described accurately. Much of the violence has involved disputes between criminal networks rather than tourists being specifically targeted. Visitors should still research local conditions, particularly when venturing beyond familiar sightseeing areas. Marseille’s size and varied neighborhoods make it especially useful to plan where you’ll stay and how you’ll travel between attractions.

Marseille (continued)

For solo visitors, Marseille’s Vieux-Port and established tourist districts provide convenient starting points for sightseeing. Use reputable public transportation or licensed taxis, particularly late at night, and keep valuables secure in crowded areas. If you’re planning to hike or swim around the Calanques, check access restrictions, weather conditions, and trail difficulty before setting out. The original article included shooting statistics from 2023 without explaining their date or context. Those historical figures shouldn’t be presented as current conditions. For a more reliable picture, check recent local reporting and official travel guidance shortly before your visit.

Bradford, United Kingdom

Bradford, United Kingdom 252

Bradford is a city in West Yorkshire known for its industrial heritage, Victorian architecture, and cultural institutions. Its attractions include the National Science and Media Museum and the UNESCO-listed Saltaire village nearby. Like other cities with large residential and commercial districts, Bradford experiences a range of criminal activity, but the original article’s numerical comparisons were inaccurate. In particular, the suggestion that its crime rate was dozens of times higher than England’s national average isn’t supported by the cited data. There’s also no credible basis for calling Bradford the most dangerous city in Europe.

Bradford (continued)

Visitors exploring Bradford independently can make use of its bus services and rail connections to nearby destinations, including Leeds. Historic attractions such as Bolling Hall provide opportunities to learn about the city’s past, while the wider area offers additional museums and heritage sites. Basic precautions remain sensible, particularly when navigating unfamiliar streets late at night or using busy transportation hubs. Choose accommodation that suits your plans and check local travel arrangements before heading out. As with the other UK destinations on this list, official national guidance is more useful than an exaggerated ranking suggesting that the entire city is unsafe.
