The U.S. States With the Highest Concentration of Hate Groups

Post created March 26, 2026

Hate groups continue to exist across the United States, and their presence varies widely by region. While progress has been made over time in civil rights and legal protections, organizations that promote extremist or discriminatory ideologies have not disappeared.

This article examines the states with the highest concentration of hate groups, based on data from the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Year in Hate and Extremism report, along with population data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The analysis includes a range of groups, such as white supremacist organizations, anti-government militias, and other extremist movements identified in national tracking reports.

It’s important to note that not all incidents of hate or bias are directly tied to organized groups. However, tracking where these organizations are most active can provide a clearer picture of broader trends and regional differences across the country.

By looking at this data, readers can better understand how the presence of these groups varies nationwide and how it relates to population size and geographic distribution.
