What is a Streetcar?

Before we begin, allow us to explain what a streetcar actually is. A streetcar, also known as a tram or trolley, is an electric railway system that operates on tracks embedded in city streets. It is a form of public transportation designed to carry a larger number of passengers within urban areas.

Additionally, streetcars use overhead electric wires for power, running silently and emitting zero emissions. They have designated stops along their routes and operate on fixed schedules, providing reliable transportation options to passengers, reduce congestion, and contribute to sustainable transportation.

Amazingly enough, they serve as vital links between neighborhoods and key destinations, adding to the charm of cities. Plus, their unique combination of convenience and rail travel, streetcars offer a distinctive way to explore.

How to Get There & Location:

Getting to the Seattle Streetcar is easy, and you have multiple options depending on your starting point. Whether you’re arriving from the airport, downtown, or other parts of the city, here are some convenient ways to reach the streetcar lines:

From Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA):

Light Rail: If you’re arriving at SEA Airport, take the Link Light Rail towards downtown Seattle. Get off at the Westlake Station, which serves as a major hub for various transit options, including the Seattle Streetcar.

Ride-Sharing Services: Popular ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are readily available at the airport. Simply request a ride and set your destination to one of the streetcar stations.

The streetcar lines are well-marked, and maps are available at each station to help you navigate the routes. Best Times to Go: Weather and Tourist Seasons

When planning your Seattle Streetcar adventure, it’s essential to consider the best times to go. Here are some factors to keep in mind:

Weather:

Seattle is known for its mild and rainy climate, so it’s wise to check the weather forecast before hopping on the streetcar. While the streetcar operates in all weather conditions, it’s more enjoyable to ride on a clear day when you can appreciate the city’s scenic views. However, don’t let a little rain deter you—Seattle’s charm shines even in drizzly weather.

High Tourist Season:

Seattle attracts a significant number of visitors during the summer months (June to August). The streets and attractions can get crowded, including the streetcar. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) and fall (September to October). After all, you’ll still get to enjoy pleasant weather and explore the city without the peak crowds.

Low Tourist Season:

The winter months (November to February) typically see fewer tourists in Seattle. While the weather may be colder and wetter, it presents a unique opportunity to experience the city at a more relaxed pace. The streetcar is often less crowded during this time, allowing you to bask in the sights and sounds of Seattle without the hustle and bustle.

Operating Hours

The Seattle Streetcar operates on different schedules for each line. Currently, the South Lake Union Line runs from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM on weekdays and 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM on weekends. The First Hill Line operates from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM on weekdays and 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM on weekends. It’s important to check the official Seattle Streetcar website or consult the posted schedules at the stations for any updates or changes to operating hours.

Costs Associated with Riding the Seattle Streetcar

As you plan your Seattle Streetcar excursion, it’s essential to be aware of any costs associated with riding the streetcar. Here are some details to keep in mind:

Fare/Admission:

Good news! The Seattle Streetcar is fare-free for those under the age of 18, and incredibly cheap for everyone else. This makes it a convenient and budget-friendly transportation option for exploring the city.

TypeSingle RideDay Pass
Adult (19 – 64)$2.25$4.50
Children/Youth (18 & under)FreeFree
Seniors (65+)/RRFP*$1.00$2.00
ORCA LIFT+$1.00$4.00

Please visit the website to double-check fares, as prices can fluctuate.

Also, there are currently two different ways to pay, one is with an ORCA card and the other is a paper ticket.

Paper Ticket

Buy a paper ticket at a pay station, located at each Streetcar station. Pay stations accept credit cards or coins. You can purchase up to five single-ride or day pass tickets in one transaction.

Purchase a Transit Card:

To ride the Seattle Streetcar, you’ll need a valid fare payment. Consider purchasing an ORCA card, which is a convenient regional transit card that can be used on multiple public transportation systems in the area.

An ORCA card is great because it can be used for trains, buses, ferries, light rails, and more! So no matter which direction you’re coming from or if you enjoy day trips around the city, this card is a great one to have. Additionally, transfer costs are low or sometimes even no additional costs, if riding between certain times. But when paying fares with cash (depending on transit types) or a paper ticket, there is no transfer discount, the costs have to be repaid each boarding.

Regardless, having one on hand to pair the buses, light rails, and other public transportation with the free Streetcar will make for an effortless trip.

Look for where you can purchase your ORCA transit card here!

Parking:

If you’re driving to the streetcar line, you may need to consider parking options. Each streetcar line has different parking availability and regulations. For example, if you’re planning to ride the South Lake Union Line, there are various paid parking lots and street parking options near the line. However, parking availability and fees may vary, so it’s recommended to check for updated information before your visit, and to be patient when trying to find parking.
