The Pacific Northwest has a long history of unusual sightings in the sky. With its mountain ranges, remote forests, military flight activity, coastal weather patterns, and wide-open rural areas, the region has produced decades of reports involving strange lights, fast-moving objects, and aircraft that witnesses could not easily identify.
One of the most famous cases came in 1947, when pilot Kenneth Arnold reported seeing a group of unusual objects near Mount Rainier. His account helped popularize the phrase “flying saucer” and became one of the best-known UFO reports in American history. Since then, Washington, Oregon, and other parts of the Pacific Northwest have continued to produce sightings reported by pilots, residents, law enforcement officers, and other witnesses.
This slideshow looks at some of the most puzzling UFO sightings connected to the Pacific Northwest. Some may have possible explanations, from weather events to aircraft or optical illusions, while others remain part of the region’s long-running fascination with the unexplained.
